The Skin Barrier Function: Guardian of Dermatological Health

The skin’s barrier function is a complex system, serving as the body’s initial defense against external threats to overall dermatological health. In this article, we’ll explore the multifaceted role of the skin barrier, emphasizing its significance. Additionally, we’ll delve into the consequences of a compromised barrier and its impact on skin health.

Understanding skin barriers

Understanding the Skin’s Barrier Function

The skin, our largest organ, boasts a remarkable defense mechanism called the barrier function. Located in the outermost layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum, this barrier shields the body from external factors like pathogens, pollutants, and UV radiation.

Roles and Functions of the Skin Barrier

  • Preventing Water Loss: The skin barrier’s primary role is to curb excessive water loss by creating a hydrophobic layer with lipids like ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids.
  • Defense Against Pathogens: Rich in antimicrobial peptides, the outer skin layer forms an inhospitable environment for bacteria, fungi, and viruses, preventing infections.
  • Regulation of Temperature: The skin aids in regulating body temperature by controlling sweat evaporation and preventing dehydration.
  • Protection from Environmental Stressors: The barrier shields against pollution, UV radiation, and free radicals, minimizing oxidative damage and premature aging.

Consequences of a Compromised Skin Barrier

A compromised barrier leads to various dermatological issues:

  • Increased Sensitivity: Heightened sensitivity, redness, and a tendency to react negatively to skincare products or environmental factors.
  • Dehydration: Dryness, flakiness, and a lack of suppleness due to increased water loss.
  • Inflammation: Redness, swelling, and inflammation, seen in conditions like dermatitis or eczema.
  • Infections and Allergies: Increased susceptibility to infections and allergic reactions due to weakened defense.
  • Accelerated Aging: Premature aging signs, including fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone.
  • Impaired Healing: Slow healing of wounds and prolonged recovery from injuries or inflammation.
  • Hyperpigmentation: Dark spots and uneven skin tone due to increased melanin production in response to damage.
  • Rosacea Flare-Ups: Increased skin sensitivity and inflammation leading to rosacea symptoms.
  • Exacerbation of Existing Conditions: Compromised barriers worsen pre-existing skin conditions like psoriasis, acne, or eczema.

Addressing a Compromised Skin Barrier

Estheticians can employ targeted strategies:

  • Gentle Cleansing: Encourage mild, pH-balanced cleansers to avoid stripping natural oils.
  • Barrier Repair Ingredients: Recommend products with ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and fatty acids for barrier repair.
  • Avoid Over-exfoliation: Advise against excessive exfoliation to prevent further damage.
  • Sun Protection: Emphasize sun protection to prevent UV-induced damage.

Ingredients and Treatments to Avoid with a Compromised Barrier:

  • Harsh Cleansers: Opt for gentle, pH-balanced cleansers over those with sulfates.
  • Alcohol-Based Products: Choose alcohol-free alternatives to prevent dehydration.
  • Fragrance: Prefer fragrance-free or naturally scented formulas
  • Physical and Chemical Exfoliants: Limit use, especially with compromised skin.
  • Retinoids: These may be too aggressive for compromised skin.
  • Hot Water: Use lukewarm water to prevent stripping natural oils.
  • Abrasive Tools: Opt for gentle cleansing methods to avoid trauma.
  • Long Hot Baths or Showers: Limit exposure to prevent barrier compromise.
  • Overdoing Actives: Caution against overusing multiple active ingredients.

Individuals with compromised skin barriers should consult skincare professionals for personalized routines. Regular consultations ensure proper care and maintenance, preventing further progression of skin conditions.

The skin’s barrier function is pivotal for dermatological health, contributing to protection, hydration, and overall well-being. Estheticians armed with knowledge about the skin barrier’s functions and consequences of compromise play a crucial role in guiding clients

Understanding Skin Health: A Comprehensive Guide for Estheticians

Understanding Skin Health: A Comprehensive Guide for Estheticians

As estheticians, it is crucial to have a deep understanding of the basics of skin health to provide effective and tailored skincare solutions for our clients. In this article, we will delve into the intricacies of skin health, with a focus on the hydro-lipidic barrier, skin barrier function, and the microbiome from a clinical perspective. Additionally, we will explore factors affecting overall skin health, identify harmful practices to be avoided, and discuss proactive measures to enhance skin barrier health.

The Hydro-Lipidic Barrier

The hydro-lipidic barrier, also known as the acid mantle, is a protective film that covers the skin’s surface. Composed of water (hydro) and lipids (fats), this barrier plays a pivotal role in maintaining skin health. Estheticians must comprehend the significance of the hydro-lipidic barrier in preventing water loss, protecting against external aggressors, and supporting optimal skin function.

Skin Barrier Function

The skin barrier, consisting of the stratum corneum, is the outermost layer of the epidermis responsible for shielding the body from environmental stressors. A healthy skin barrier ensures proper hydration, regulates temperature, and acts as a defense against pathogens. As estheticians, recognizing the signs of a compromised skin barrier is essential for developing effective treatment plans.

Microbiome and Skin Health

The skin microbiome, a diverse community of microorganisms residing on the skin’s surface, plays a crucial role in maintaining skin health. These microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, contribute to the skin’s defense mechanisms and overall balance. Estheticians should be aware of the delicate balance of the microbiome and its impact on skin conditions.

Factors Affecting Overall Skin Health

Various factors can influence overall skin health, and understanding these elements is crucial for estheticians. Lifestyle choices, environmental factors, genetics, and skincare practices all contribute to the condition of the skin. Estheticians should assess these factors to develop personalized skincare regimens for their clients.

Harmful Practices to Avoid

Certain habits and practices can compromise skin health. Overexfoliation, using harsh products, and neglecting sun protection can lead to a weakened skin barrier. Estheticians must educate clients on these harmful practices to promote better skincare habits and long-term skin health.

Maintaining pH at 5.5: The Key to Skin Health

The skin’s pH, which measures acidity or alkalinity, plays a crucial role in maintaining skin health. The optimal pH for the skin is around 5.5, slightly acidic. This acidic environment helps support the hydro-lipidic barrier and the skin microbiome. Estheticians must emphasize the importance of maintaining this delicate balance for overall skin health.

Effects of pH Imbalance on the Skin

Deviation from the optimal pH level can lead to various skin issues. An overly alkaline environment disrupts the skin barrier, making it more susceptible to dryness, inflammation, and infections. Estheticians should be aware of the potential consequences of pH imbalance to provide informed recommendations for skincare routines.

Strategies to Maintain pH Balance

To support the skin’s pH at 5.5, estheticians can recommend pH-balanced cleansers and toners. Additionally, incorporating products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and ceramides can enhance the skin’s natural barrier function. Regular monitoring and adjustments to skincare routines based on individual needs are essential to maintain optimal pH levels.

Proactive Measures for Skin Barrier Health

Estheticians play a pivotal role in promoting skin barrier health through proactive measures. Customized skincare routines, incorporating moisturizers, antioxidants, and sunscreens, can strengthen the skin barrier and protect against external stressors. Regular assessments and adjustments based on the client’s changing needs ensure continuous support for skin health.

A comprehensive understanding of skin health, the hydro-lipidic barrier, skin barrier function, and the microbiome is essential for estheticians aiming to provide effective and personalized skincare solutions. Emphasizing the importance of maintaining the skin’s pH at 5.5, avoiding harmful practices, and implementing proactive measures will empower estheticians to support their clients in achieving optimal skin health. By integrating clinical perspectives into skincare practices, estheticians can elevate their expertise and contribute to the long-term well-being of their clients’ skin.

The Perfect Pair: Skin Care Product Pairing

Written by: Thea Christie, Eminence Organics

It’s no secret that we love a good skin care mixology. Bringing multiple beautiful products together means that you can double the skin care benefits offered by our organic formulas.

To make sure you maximize these benefits, our Product Support team has created a list of complementary pairings that your Clients are sure to love. From toners to moisturizers, let’s explore the best product combinations for optimal results.

Skin Care Product Pairing

The Best Product Pairings For Face And Body

Treat Your Client With An Exfoliation Trio

With a luscious and refreshing pineapple scent, the Pineapple Refining Tonique gently removes dead skin cells on the top layer of the skin to promote an even tone and radiant appearance. This toner has enzymatic and chemical exfoliating properties that are suitable for all skin types, including sensitive. This toner unclogs pores and smooths out skin texture. It also brightens the skin by minimizing the appearance of dark spots and prepping the skin for better absorption of other brightening ingredients.

Follow the toner with the Bright Skin Licorice Root Exfoliating Peel and pre-treat before a further exfoliation step. This solution reduces the appearance of dark spots and brightens the look of the skin. Its key ingredient, licorice, not only improves the look of uneven skin tone, but also visibly helps with skin elasticity and the look of wrinkles and fine lines.

Complete the combo with the Mangosteen Lactic Pro Peel 10%. This professional-only lactic acid peel gently resurfaces the skin and refines pores for a more luminous and even-looking complexion. The Lactic Acid Complex used is a proprietary blend of actives consisting of lactic acid from plant sugars, red clover flower extract and ribose from corn seeds, formulated to resurface and rejuvenate skin.

Mix And Match Your Masks

Multiple masks can work in harmony to amplify benefits for the skin, including delicious duos like the Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Masque and the Stone Crop Masque. You can either apply these masks independently of each other, mix them together using a 1:1 ratio, or layer one mask on top of the other and blend them together.

The Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Masque is a cream-gel mask for all skin types. This mask is formulated with Vitamin C and Vitamin E to reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles and improve the appearance of the skin’s health.

The Stone Crop Masque contains nourishing honey, hydrating stone crop and antioxidant-rich lemon. This mask will help your Clients’ skin appear healthier, more moisturized and brighter.

Perfect Pairing For A Facial Massage

Offer your Clients a comforting facial massage using the Coconut Age Corrective Moisturizer and Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil. Both products are versatile, so you have three options for application: either apply these two products independently of each other, mix them together using a 1:1 ratio, or layer one on top of the other and blend them together.

Instantly tighten and lift Clients’ skin with the Coconut Age Corrective Moisturizer. Massaging this onto the face and neck will moisturize the skin, promote the look of elasticity and delay the visible signs of aging.

The Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil also fights the signs of aging, by reducing the look of wrinkles and improving skin texture. Essential oils like rosehip oil, jojoba oil and seabuckthorn oil are packed with essential fatty acids and antioxidants to hydrate and moisturize the skin.

Double Up Your Serums

Treat Clients’ skin with the Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Serum and Bright Skin Licorice Root Booster-Serum. You have different options for application: Either apply these products independently of each other, mix them together using a 1:1 ratio, or layer one on top of the other and blend them together.

The Citrus & Kale C+E Serum is formulated with Vitamin C to reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin E and botanical ferulic acid ingredients help with the effectiveness of Vitamin C and also improve the appearance of skin health.

Combine with the Bright Skin Licorice Root Booster-Serum to help your Clients achieve luminous skin. Lactic acid rejuvenates the skin by removing dead skin cells while the Natural Hydroquinone Alternative Complex brightens the skin’s appearance.

Super-Boost Your Moisturizer

Rejuvenate your Clients’ complexion by mixing the Superfood Booster-Powder with a cream moisturizer. To hydrate and brighten all skin types, moisturize with the Stone Crop Whip Moisturizer. For normal and dry skin, and skin showing the visible signs of aging, you can apply the Coconut Age Corrective Moisturizer.

Add a scoop of the Superfood Booster-Powder to your choice of moisturizer. This powder blends brightening and antioxidant-rich ingredients that support an even tone and brighterlooking skin. Add a level scoop of powder using the dosing spoon with a cream-based moisturizer in the palm of the hand and mix well before application. When thoroughly mixed, you’ll notice that the booster-powder will blend seamlessly into the moisturizer with no gritty texture.

The Stone Crop Whip Moisturizer’s key ingredient is stone crop, a Hungarian succulent known for addressing hydration and being able to brighten a dull skin texture through its antioxidant and gentle alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) content. This moisturizer provides hydration by attracting water and sealing it into the skin. As previously mentioned, the Coconut Age Corrective Moisturizer improves the look of elasticity in the skin and delays the visible signs of aging such
as fine lines and wrinkles.

Tandem Lip Care

Give your Clients smooth, silky lips with a combo of the Marine Flower Peptide Lip Serum and Citrus Lip Balm. Lips are commonly forgotten in skin care, but the delicate skin in this area can be vulnerable if not protected from the elements.

The Marine Flower Peptide Lip Serum provides the lips with algae, a nutrient-rich ingredient that offers a dose of minerals, amino acids and antioxidants to increase firmness. This serum also provides long-lasting hydration to the skin. The Citrus Lip Balm builds off the Marine Flower Peptide Serum’s hydrating effects with ingredients like shea butter and sunflower seed oil that give lips a smoother shine and hydrated look.

Understanding and Addressing Dry vs. Dehydrated Skin: A Guide for Spa Professionals

Spa Skin Hydration Dermeco
Spa Solutions for Your Success –

As spa owners and aesthetic professionals, understanding the nuances of different skin types is crucial for providing effective treatments and achieving optimal client satisfaction. Two seemingly similar conditions, dry and dehydrated skin, often cause confusion, leading to misdiagnoses and ineffective treatment plans.

Dry vs. Dehydrated Skin: Key Differences:

Dry skin: This is a skin type characterized by a lack of sebum production. This natural oil plays a vital role in maintaining the skin’s barrier function, preventing moisture loss and protecting against external aggressors. Dry skin is typically rough, tight, and prone to peeling and irritation.

Dehydrated skin: This is a skin condition that can occur in any skin type, including oily skin. It refers to a lack of water in the skin, regardless of the sebum production. Dehydrated skin often feels tight and uncomfortable, especially after cleansing or exposure to harsh elements.

Recognizing the Signs:

Dry skin:

·         Rough and scaly texture

·         Tightness and discomfort

·         Lack of visible pores

·         Fine lines and wrinkles

·         Difficulty absorbing skincare products

Dehydrated skin:

·         Roughness, especially on cheeks and around eyes

·         Localized wrinkles at corners of eyes

·         Visible pores in the T-zone

·         Tightness and discomfort, worse after cleansing

·         Immediate improvement with moisturizer application

Treatment Strategies:

Dry skin:

·         Exfoliation: Regular exfoliation (2-3 times per week) removes dead skin cells, allowing better absorption of moisturizers. Avoid harsh scrubs and choose gentle exfoliators with hydrating ingredients.

·         Moisturizing: Apply a rich, nourishing cream containing lipids and water-capturing agents (e.g., hyaluronic acid) twice daily.

·         Oils: Incorporate oils like borage seed oil or evening primrose oil for extra nourishment and protection.

·         Internal hydration: Encourage clients to drink plenty of water and eat healthy fats for optimal skin health.

Dehydrated skin:

·         Hydrating cleansers: Choose gentle cleansers with hyaluronic acid or other hydrating ingredients.

·         Hydrating serums: Apply a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid or glycerin before moisturizer.

·         Humectant masks: Use masks containing humectants like hyaluronic acid or honey to draw moisture into the skin.

·         Moisturizing creams: Apply a lightweight, hydrating cream with water-capturing agents twice daily.

·         Humidifiers: Adding a humidifier to the treatment room and client’s environment can improve hydration levels.

Himalayan Salt Stone Massage Benefits

Written by: Thea Christie

himalayan salt stone massage eminence organics

If your Clients are coming to you exhausted and burned out, you may want to suggest a rejuvenating Himalayan salt stone massage. This type of massage can induce relaxation, release stress and help a Client refocus on self care. Keep reading to learn all about the rejuvenating benefits of a Himalayan salt stone massage and why you may want to add it to your list of treatments.

What Is A Himalayan Salt Stone Massage?

Himalayan salt is an iron oxide-based rock salt sourced from the Himalayan Mountains, which stretch from Afghanistan to Bhutan in South Asia. It is famous for its stand-out pink color and rich mineral content, including high levels of magnesium, calcium and potassium.

In skin care, Himalayan salts are used as exfoliating scrubs during facials to buff the complexion and during body treatments to smooth skin all over the body while improving circulation and providing relaxation. They are also used to perform a Himalayan salt stone massage.

Estheticians use heated salt stones and place them on various points across the body such as on the legs, back and feet. They glide the salt stones over the body to heat the muscles, increase blood flow and release tension. The esthetician can customize the massage using different techniques such as trigger point therapy, Swedish massage or deep tissue massage.

Benefits Of Himalayan Salt Stone Massage

One major benefit of this massage is an improvement in the skin’s appearance. The mineral content in Himalayan salt provides exfoliation and improves circulation, leaving the Clients’ skin looking smooth and soft.

As this massage utilizes heated salt stones, Himalayan salt can also work as an anti-inflammatory tool.

According to Eminence Organics Product Support Representative Natasha Cannone, “Himalayan salts have been said to relieve pain such as muscle weakness, headaches, joint pain and fatigue.” The heat from the stones relieves tension and knots in the muscles and eases stress in the body, making it a useful treatment for those who suffer from pain or discomfort.

As a result of relieving pain and tension from the body, Clients may notice a positive effect on their emotional well-being. The warm stones coupled with a relaxed body free from discomfort tend to leave the Client feeling calmer and less stressed.

Some theories suggest that negative ions generated in Himalayan salt contribute to the sense of peace and deep relaxation that people experience. Many salts found in natural environments such as mountains, oceans and waterfalls contain negative ions. However, the scientific evidence around the specific impacts of the negative ions in this salt is limited.

What Skin Care Products To Use In A Himalayan Salt Stone Massage

For a Himalayan salt stone massage, our Apricot Body Oil is an excellent choice for the treatment as it easily absorbs and helps the stone glide across the skin. Its main ingredient, apricot kernel oil, is rich in essential fatty acids and Vitamins A and E that provide moisturization and leave the skin looking hydrated.

You can also provide a luxurious and pampering experience with our Stone Crop Body Oil. This oil is made with stone crop, a succulent plant, as well as sweet almond oil, sunflower oil and jojoba oil to provide further hydration to the skin.

Who Should Avoid Getting Himalayan Salt Stone Massage?

Himalayan salt massages are not recommended for those with:

  • Severe skin conditions
  • High blood pressure
  • Kidney disease

These massages, however, are fine for sensitive skin types. Even though they provide exfoliation, these salt stones feel smooth and non-abrasive, so you can still use them on Clients with sensitive skin.

ESI SHOW ReUniting The Beauty Industry

What Is A Typical Microcurrent Facial?

A typical microcurrent facial begins the same as a regular facial treatment, with cleansing, exfoliation, masking and other optional add-ons like LED light therapy. Before the microcurrent process starts, a water-based conductive gel is applied to the skin to help the currents reach the facial muscles and to prevent any stinging.

Celebrity facialist Joanna Vargas, known for her transformative microcurrent facials, explains the microcurrent experience to Byrdie perfectly: “The microcurrent facial uses two handheld prongs that deliver precise dosages of energy to the skin and work simultaneously to repair and produce collagen in the dermis while gently erasing signs of aging in the epidermis, which is the top layer of skin.”

Microcurrent Facial

How Exactly Does A Microcurrent Facial Work?

Although microcurrent facials may be a new service in the skin care space, doctors and physiotherapists have been using microcurrent therapy as a muscle stimulator since the 1980s for pain relief and even facial paralysis conditions, like Bell’s palsy. Once the face-lifting effects were noticed by the beauty industry, it wasn’t long before the microcurrent device was adopted as a skin care tool.

When you think of microcurrent therapy in the same way as physical fitness, the process makes perfect sense. Regular exercise and lifting weights work the muscles in the body to build strength and create a toned appearance, so why not do the same for the face?

Microcurrent therapy helps strengthen facial muscles by stimulating the production of (ATP), formally known as adenosine triphosphate. ATP is the energy currency for our bodies, essential for many processes in our cells including muscle contraction. According to a study in Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, the low-grade electricity emitted from microcurrent devices stimulates ATP production, which allows for muscle contraction that strengthens facial muscles over time.

Benefits Of Microcurrent Therapy

The coolest thing about microcurrent facials is that most Clients will notice instant results, making it the perfect non-invasive skin care treatment. Microcurrent also doubles as a lymphatic drainage massage given the device hits a lot of pressure points in the face, so a more defined appearance is almost guaranteed.

Microcurrent facials tighten and smooth the muscles and connective tissues in the face and have been shown to reduce wrinkles, mostly around the forehead area. Clients will notice enhanced facial features and a more lifted, sculpted and awakened appearance. This treatment can also improve blood circulation and may stimulate collagen production in the dermis, resulting in healthier, more plump-looking skin.

Microcurrent therapy also offers a variety of non-cosmetic benefits, including faster wound healing, reduced pain from sinus congestion, and improved functioning of atrophied muscles, according to Medical News Today

What Is The Cost Of Treatment?

The beauty of microcurrent therapy is that there are both at-home and in-office options, making it attainable for more people. Different devices will have different levels of electrical currents, with in-office devices usually being much more effective. That being said, the at-home options are great for daily maintenance, as consistent microcurrent facials are key to seeing lasting results.

The cost of treatment is best determined by spa location and the level of expertise of the technician performing the treatment. According to Medical News Today, microcurrent facials range from $200-$600 per session. At-home devices range from $180-$500 depending on the size and strength of the device.

Is Microcurrent For Everyone?

Microcurrent facials are amazing for all skin types, which makes them a great addition to any treatment menu. However, anyone with a pacemaker, metal implants, or who is pregnant should avoid this treatment. Clients with severe acne should also avoid using microcurrents, which could aggravate inflammation.

You may also want to avoid this treatment for at least two weeks after botox or fillers, as you don’t want to move anything around. After two weeks, this treatment can actually enhance botox and filler results and extend procedure results.

Microcurrent Aftercare Tips

As microcurrent facials are a non-invasive treatment with zero downtime, the aftercare is very minimal. It’s best to be gentle with your skin after treatment and avoid any harsh scrubs or active ingredients like retinol, especially if your treatment includes exfoliation. That aside, Clients can resume all regular activities right away and no redness/irritation should be expected.

Note 1: This article is intended for licensed and certified spa professionals only. Before offering any of these treatments to your Clients, it is the responsibility of all spa professionals to ensure they are trained and certified in the relevant spa treatments, prioritize the safety and well-being of their Clients and adhere to the guidelines outlined by their professional licensing and certification.

The Elite Formula

Here is the formula for how we stack technologies for the Elite Facial. Each step of the facial activates powerful natural processes in the skin while maximizing the impact of the steps to come.

Step 1: Carbon Facial using Q-Switched Nd: YAG

This treatment provides the ultimate cleansing and exfoliation. A layer of carbon is applied to the skin, then blasted away with the 1064 nm laser, removing dirt, oil, dead skin cells and debris along with it from the surface of the skin.

Also known as the Hollywood facial, this step increases cellular turnover, with this rejuvenating treatment addressing multiple signs of photoaging. It also treats acne and post-inflammatory acneic pigmentation.

Step 2: VP Dual Spot Treatment powered by Dynamic Pulse Control TM

The VP Dual handpiece uses SharpLight’s award-winning Dynamic Pulse ControlTM technology to powerfully spot treat broken capillaries and stubborn pigment on the skin. With the ability to target both melanin and hemoglobin, its concentrated 1.5 cm2 -sized crystal tip initiates the required thermal damage for desired lesion clearance. This handpiece specializes in targeting pigmentation concerns, covering most of the melanin absorption spectrum.

Step 3: Skin Rejuvenation with DPC™ – SR 580

Powered by Dynamic Pulse ControlTM technology, the SR 580 performs a full-face skin rejuvenation facial through advanced selective photothermolysis. Effectively stimulate neocollagenesis to strengthen the skin’s structure – easing fine lines, wrinkles, and textural concerns. The SR 580 performs superior pigmentary lesion breakdown, creating more even skin tone and improving the skin’s appearance.

Step 4: Fractional Resurfacing with Er: YAG 2940 nm Fractional Laser

The last step in the Elite Advanced facial utilizes an Er: YAG 2940nm Fractional laser technology. This fractional resurfacing treatment effectively treats fine lines, wrinkles, and dullness. SharpLight’s fractional technology fosters quicker healing by creating small islets of wounds in the skin. To resurface the skin, the 2940 nm laser-tissue interaction will result in the ablation of superficial skin layers with minimal collateral thermal damage. The surrounding intact skin supports the body’s healing and rejuvenation efforts through the wound-healing response and process of neocollagenesis.

Sharplight Technologies – Sonia’s Testimonial

Treatment Schedule:

This treatment will require 1 – 6 sessions based on your client’s needs and goals. Sessions are to occur every 4 – 6 weeks, depending on your client’s rate of healing, as this treatment uses the Fractional handpiece that involves some downtime.

The Unseen Impact: How Pollution Ages Our Skin

URBAN POLLUTION ; A highly relevant problem of our everyday life

Pollution also affects the health of our skin. We live in an increasingly urbanized and polluted world. Our skin is constantly exposed to the pollutant agents: smog, exhaust gas emissions, smoke, heavy metals, fine dust particles and other toxins.

Pollutant agents settle on the skin, creating a film which hinders skin oxygenation, alters its protective barrier and increases the production of free radicals.

Pollution causes damaging effects to the skin and poses a serious problem, especially in big urban areas. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), globally more than 80 % of people living in urban areas are exposed to air that exceeds acceptable limits for pollution.

Exposure to these substances leads to visible skin ageing due to the generation of oxidative stress and induces several alterations, including a lower skin cell vitality, free radicals and reduced number of Langerhans cells of the immune system.

Such damage leads to premature aging and visible changes in the skin, including wrinkles and redness, dark spots and dullness.

As we age, our skin ‘s ability to protect itself against the environment is greatly reduced.

Pollution also affects the health of our skin.

All skin types are affected by pollution and UV; however, fair skin is more susceptible and more prone to early skin ageing including collagen loss and sagging skin.

Fitzpatrick Skin types 3,4, and 5, are more likely to develop dark spots and dullness due to pollution and UV exposure stimulating melanin in their skin.

Oily skins are also in need of protection as large pores allow more pollution to enter into the skin.

The good news is that we can protect the skin from pollution damage by using skin care that includes active ingredients scientifically proven to protect against pollution damage.

Diego dalla Palma (*) skincare combines key anti pollution ingredients with sunscreens and anti oxidants to shield the skin against such damage.

One such ingredient is Pollushield ™ found in Urban Life by Diego dalla Palma. In clinical trials volunteers using the ingredient showed lower levels of heavy metals embedded in the skin and a greater antioxidative capacity.

Pollushield™ a functional ingredient helped achieve an improvement in the skin complexion, reducing the appearance of dullness and spots. This anti-pollution and anti-free radicals functional ingredient assists in counteracting the negative consequences of pollution on the skin as it provides a barrier between the skin and pollutants and boosts its antioxidative defense.

It offers two complementary effects: binding of toxic metals by a polymer with metal chelating properties to prevent their interaction with the skin as well as a strong antioxidative action by a potent free radical scavenger to avoid oxidative damage within the skin.

Another cosmetic ingredient, the “Hydrafilm system” found in Urban Life by Diego dalla Palma, is a polysaccharide that helps protect the skin against pollution. It creates a film over the skin “like a second skin effect”
Thanks to its matrix-forming property, it creates a barrier to shield against the 3 types of pollution stresses:

  • Atmospheric (carbon particles, particulate matter and heavy metals)
  • UV exposure
  • Domestic (chemicals,dusts,etc.)
and so limit the skin extra and intracellular induced damages (oxidative stress, inflammation, cellular and mitochondrial toxicity, etc)

As skincare professionals, it’s essential that we educate our clients on the importance of using a daily moisturizer with anti pollution ingredients, anti oxidants and UV sun screens to protect our skin and keep it healthy and youthful.

Here are two skincare treatments offered by Diego dalla Palma:

URBAN LIFE SMOOTHING ANTI-POLLUTION MASK : an innovative smoothing serum mask. Absorbs toxins and traces of impurities present on the surface of the face. Creates a comfortable hydrating and protective film on the face when removed, leaving skin looking instantly refreshed and invigorated. Instant action: instantly smoother, hydrated and more radiant skin.

URBAN LIFE DAILY PROTECTIVE FLUID: This product protects against all types of pollution. It ensures strong, hydrated, and younger-looking skin that is free to breathe. Contains Pollushield™, an invisible protective shield that prevents smog, smoke, fine dust and other pollutants from adhering to the skin and facilitates their removal during cleansing. The smoothing texture leaves the skin instantly more beautiful. Combats the action of free radicals and makes make-up last longer when sprayed on the face after moisturiser or make-up.

Body Wrap Treatment: What Clients Can Expect

For Professionals; Get ready for a deep dive into the world of body wrap treatment, a luxurious path to revitalization and beauty. Brought to you by Eminence Organic Skin Care and penned by Thea Christie, it peels back the layers on the fascinating universe of body wraps and their power to boost your clients’ well-being and glow.

Thea navigates the waters of body wraps with grace and pinpoint accuracy. This article stands as a shining beacon of her know-how in the spa treatment sphere and a true aficionado in boosting clients’ zest for life through skincare,

Body Wrap Treatment - Eminence Organic skin Care

What Are Body Wraps?

Body wraps are spa treatments that involve applying a mixture of ingredients to the skin. The Client’s body is then covered with a wrap, usually made of plastic or cloth. The wrap is secured in place while the Client is left to relax for anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. The treatment works by trapping heat, allowing the ingredients to penetrate deeply into the skin.

Benefits Of Body Wraps

Hydrating And Moisturizing Benefits

One of the main benefits of body wraps is their ability to hydrate the skin. Dehydrated skin can look dull and feel rough to the touch, but body wraps can help restore moisture, leaving the skin feeling soft and smooth. In addition to hydrating ingredients, the heat generated by the wrap encourages pores to open up so that the skin can better absorb the moisture introduced by the body treatment.

Improving Skin Texture

Additionally, some types of body wraps are designed to gently exfoliate and remove dead skin cells, which revitalizes the look of dull skin and encourages new skin cells to come to the surface. These kinds of wraps can give the Client a smoother, more even-toned skin texture.

Exfoliating Benefits

You can provide Clients with smoother-looking skin by choosing body wrap products with exfoliating ingredients. A product with an exfoliating acid helps remove layers of dry, dead skin to reveal fresher, smoother-looking skin beneath. For product recommendations, explore the next section below.

Minimizing The Appearance Of Cellulite

Cellulite is a common concern for many people and body wraps can help reduce its appearance. The heat generated by a body wrap stimulates blood flow, which can help improve circulation and give the skin a smoother, firmer and tightened appearance.

Relaxation Benefits

The heat from a body wrap may help reduce a Client’s stress by adding warmth to the muscles, which releases tension from the body. As the muscle tension leaves their body, this treatment method can be very soothing and comforting.

Best Body Wrap Products For Your Spa

There are many different types of body wrap products to choose from, each with its own unique set of benefits. When deciding on a product, consider the Client’s individual skin care needs and concerns. Here are our top products to consider:

Mango Enzyme Body Wrap

For Clients requiring more hydrated and smoother-looking skin, you can apply the Mango Enzyme Body Wrap. Mango is high in antioxidants and Vitamin A, along with extensive moisturizing benefits, while pineapple, lactic acid and glycolic acid gently exfoliate. The inclusion of lemon, a source of Vitamin C, helps to tone and refresh the look of the skin. This delicious mango-scented body wrap also contains a Biocomplex2™, a booster of antioxidants that restores the look of elasticity and youthfulness.

Chocolate Truffle Body Wrap

Clients will be delighted when you pull out the Chocolate Truffle Body Wrap for their treatment — the sweet aroma will make them feel as though you’re applying a decadent chocolate mousse to their skin. This wrap tightens and tones the look of crepey, wrinkled skin and provides the skin with a more hydrated appearance. Cocoa is high in antioxidants and moisturizes the skin, while almond, jojoba and macadamia nut oil soften and hydrate the skin from every angle.

Herbal Cellulite Treatment

Improve the look of cellulite on the thighs, buttocks, lower abdomen and even arms with the Herbal Cellulite Treatment. The skin will appear firmer and more elastic with paprika and skin-safe stinging nettle, which invigorate the look of the skin. The formulation also contains bioflavonoids and honey which enrich the skin with moisture. The Biocomplex2™ formulation works to bring back a look of vitality and youthfulness.

Stone Crop Restorative Body Wrap

Brighten the look of a Client’s dull skin with the Stone Crop Restorative Body Wrap. This wrap contains stone crop and aloe to hydrate and brighten. A replenishing succulent, stone crop moisturizes and rejuvenates the look of the skin. Aloe helps beautify the appearance of the skin by reducing the appearance of redness and dryness from environmental factors such as sun exposure. This body wrap also contains caffeine (sourced from coffee) to reduce the look of wrinkles and puffiness.

A Body Treatment Protocol With Body Wraps

The following four-step body treatment protocol can be performed in a wet or dry treatment room for all skin types

Table Setup

  • 2 linen sheets (to place on top of the table)
  • 1 wool blanket (to place on sheets)
  • 1 Mylar blanket (to place on top of the wool blanket)
  • 2 plastic body wrap sheets (to place on top of Mylar blanket)
  • 3 hot, wet bath towels (optional)
  • 7 hot, wet hand towels (for modesty towels and product removal)
  • 1 spatula
  • 3 bowls
  • Warm water or tea

The amount of product used will depend on the Client and the area(s) to be treated.

Please note: No body lotions or body oils should be used prior to body wraps.

Step 1: Scrub

Using a circular motion, apply the Eminence Organics body scrub of choice to the entire body, working from the outer limbs toward the heart. Leave on.

Step 2: Wrap

Dispense 2 to 4 tablespoons of the body wrap of choice into a bowl and dilute with warm water or tea in a 1:1 ratio.

Wrap Application

  • Have the Client lay face up on the table with a modesty towel over the pelvic region and décolleté area.
  • Apply a thin layer of body wrap to each leg and wrap with a plastic sheet.
  • Help the Client sit up, holding the modesty towel with their arms across their chest, and apply a thin layer of body wrap to the back.
  • Wrap the remainder of the plastic sheet around the Client’s shoulders
  • For an add-on treatment option (optional): Place a hot, wet bath towel under the Client’s back for them to lie on.
  • Help the Client lie down on their back.
  • Apply a thin layer of body wrap to each arm, cross the arms across the chest again and wrap with a plastic sheet.
  • Add-on treatment option (optional): Lay a second hot wet bath towel over the Client’s upper body and a third over their legs.
  • Wrap the second plastic sheet around the Client (and hot towels, if used), followed by a Mylar blanket and finally a wool blanket.

Flawless Skin With New Generation of Medical Peels

In recent years the tendency to looking perfect has become more and more popular. Thanks to social media and technology, there is a growing pursuit of artificial beauty. Who has never used a filter to edit a photo before? But this is not a real solution. It is just an illusion.

So how do we make this desire come true? Every woman of any age has different skin imperfections: Wrinkles, spots, discoloration, acne scars, uneven complexion…

But first, let’s analyse what flawless skin is.

A flawless skin is:

  • Fine-textured (with no large pores or imperfections)
  • Characterized by a radiant and even complexion
  • Wrinkles are minimized
  • No scars and spots
  • Clear smooth skin
  • Dewy, healthy-looking skin

In response to the desire for flawless skin, Diego Dalla Palma Professional (*) created “Resurface” treatments. These treatments are developed using the most innovative cosmeceutical clinically proven active ingredients to create professional chemical peels with no downtime.

Now you can offer the best possible results in a very short time, while other peels may cause unwanted side effects with little or no visible changes to the skin. Resurface delivers immediate and long-lasting results with no negative side effects.

Scientifically proven results with independent studies at the University Dermatology departments in Naples, Italy.

The action of controlled chemical skin resurfacing is totally different from conventional peels.

Peelings mainly cause skin exfoliation, whereas controlled resurfacing actively provokes an accelerated form of cell regeneration in the different layers of the skin, while trauma and superficial irritation are reduced.

Different protocols can be combined in a prescription program, and the strength and depth of the products are controlled by the skin specialist based on the application technique and the number of layers applied during the skin resurfacing procedure. Our Resurface treatments also include the use of specific intensive serums like Azelaic Acid for Acne, Epidermal Growth Factors for Aged skin, and Microencapsulated Retinol for all skins to achieve maximum results in the shortest possible time.

A personalized, maximum strength formulation prescription is integrated and used at home in preparation or during the completion of the resurfacing procedure. The pre and post-resurfacing support products are all enriched with Revivyl to achieve the best possible results and maintenance of the skin during the resurfacing treatments program.

Resurface is taking skin resurfacing to the next level by introducing an “outside in” and “inside out” philosophy. Advanced dermatological skin resurfacing procedures working from the outside in, combined with powerful skin nutrition working from the inside out, provide the skin with the full benefits, assisting in rapid skin restoration.

The unique combination of actives in the Resurface Anti Blemish Serum and Anti Blemish Peels is specifically formulated to correct the main acne manifestations such as comedones, papules, and pustules. It is designed to act on the 4 factors that trigger acne:

3.Microbial colonization (P. acnes)

Active and effective skin resurfacing solutions for the treatment of typical signs of aging like photo-aging, pigment changes, dull sallow appearance, superficial, and medium expression lines.

The Resurface Anti-Age Peel and Serums are specifically formulated as advanced anti-aging skin resurfacing treatments to help correct typical signs of aging.

For best results and to reduce the risk of complications, it is recommended that clients should use a prescribed Diego Dalla Palma cleansing product and exfoliation suited to their skin and the Preparatory Exfoliating Lotion 1 to 2 weeks prior to the 1st in-clinic treatment.

Clients should use the prescribed Diego Dalla Palma Treatment Serums to enhance and maintain overall results. The use of a sunscreen SPF 50+ is essential to protect the skin from UVA & UVB rays. It is recommended that sun exposure must be avoided, especially in the 7 days prior to the treatment and while undergoing treatments.
